The Generosity of the Prophet ﷺ: A Lesson for Rabi al-Awwal

In short: The Prophet ﷺ was the most generous of people. In the month of his birth, the best way to show our love is to follow his example of giving.

The month of Rabi al-Awwal 1448 is expected to begin around 14th August 2026. It is the month in which the Prophet ﷺ was born, and Muslims all over the world increase in salawat, gatherings of remembrance and good deeds. Among all his beautiful qualities, the generosity of the Prophet ﷺ is one that every one of us can try to follow.

The most generous of people

Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) said that the Prophet ﷺ was the most generous of people, and he was even more generous in Ramadan when Jibril met him, more generous than the wind that is sent out, as reported in Sahih al-Bukhari.

Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) said that the Prophet ﷺ was never asked for something and replied “no”, as reported in Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim.

The generosity of the Prophet ﷺ without fear of poverty

A man once came and asked the Prophet ﷺ for something, and he gave him a whole flock of sheep that filled a valley. The man went back to his people and told them to accept Islam, because Muhammad gives like someone who has no fear of poverty, as reported in Sahih Muslim.

This was not wealth for the sake of wealth. The Prophet ﷺ often went to bed hungry, and days passed in his house without a fire being lit for cooking. What came to him went out again to those who needed it.

Generosity is more than money

He ﷺ was generous with his time, his attention and his kindness. He would turn his whole body towards the person speaking to him. He visited the sick, accepted invitations from the poor and helped with the housework. A child could take him by the hand and lead him wherever she wanted.

Following his example this month

  • Send abundant salawat upon him every day.
  • Give something away that you love, not only what you no longer need.
  • Never turn away someone who asks, even if all you can give is a kind word.
  • Feed people. Share a meal with neighbours or give food to families in need.
  • Support orphans, whom the Prophet ﷺ loved and protected.

Honour the Prophet ﷺ Through Giving

In the month of his birth, follow his Sunnah by feeding those who are hungry.
