Sadaqah for the Deceased: Gifts That Reach Our Loved Ones

In short: Yes, charity given on behalf of a loved one who has passed away reaches them. A water pump, a mosque or a child’s education are popular ways to keep the reward flowing.

Losing a parent, a spouse or a child leaves a gap that nothing can fill. One of the great mercies of Islam is that our relationship with those we love does not end at the grave. Through du’a and through Sadaqah for the deceased, we can keep sending them gifts long after they have gone.

What the hadith tell us

A man came to the Prophet ﷺ and said that his mother had died suddenly. He felt that had she been able to speak, she would have given charity. He asked whether she would receive reward if he gave on her behalf. The Prophet ﷺ said yes, as reported in Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim.

Sayyiduna Sa’d ibn Ubadah (may Allah be pleased with him) asked the Prophet ﷺ which charity would be best for his late mother. The Prophet ﷺ replied: water. Sa’d dug a well and said, this is for Umm Sa’d, as reported by Abu Dawud and an-Nasa’i. That well was used by people for generations.

Charity that keeps on giving

The Prophet ﷺ said that when a person dies, their deeds come to an end except three: ongoing charity, knowledge that benefits others, and a righteous child who prays for them, as reported in Sahih Muslim. When we give a lasting gift on behalf of a loved one, we can help them in more than one of these ways at once.

Ideas for Sadaqah for the deceased

  • A hand pump in their name, bringing clean water to a village.
  • A contribution to a mosque, where every prayer offered can bring them reward.
  • Sponsoring a Hafiz, so the Quran is recited and learned on their behalf.
  • Sponsoring a child’s education, passing on the gift of knowledge.
  • Feeding the poor on the anniversary of their passing, or any time you miss them.

Don’t forget du’a

Alongside charity, the du’a of their children and family is one of the greatest gifts the deceased can receive. Make a habit of praying for them after every salah. It costs nothing and it never runs out.

Give a Well in Their Name

Follow the example of Sa’d ibn Ubadah and give water on behalf of your loved one. A hand pump costs £130 and we will send you a photograph once it is installed.
